R21 or R25 prototype?

That is an interesting Renault. I think it's the prototype for the 21.

It says 1987, so probably neither. More likely an early Prototype of what would later become the Safrane.

It’s the R21 protoype

Looks like it! Pretty cool thing, never seen that before.

It looks even frumpier than the car that came from it.

It looks like an uglier 1st gen Taurus.

Cool! One of the lecturers I had here at University worked at Renault in that period, developing the 1.7 engine that could be found in the 21, among others.

Picture was taken in 1987, most likely to show where the 1987 R21 came from. According to FSI, it’s a R21 protoype. But it does look a lot like a safrane too indeed... Weird lol. As if a Fuego slept with a R21 and they made a kid by accident, this thing lol

Protoypes and concept cars don’t always look better than the actual production cars (eg. Pontiac Aztec).

It looks like the average mediocre mid/late 80s sedan.

Knowing how car development works, the vehicle must have been built around 1984-ish. At least it eventually became a Clio.

The engine could be found in many Renaults. I just read a bit about the history of it.

Yeah, I meant that with among others :-P
He had quite some awesome stories about his time there.

Silly me..
I’ve never really cared too much about Renault up until a couple of years ago. I kinda love 1980s/1990s Renaults. Hearing stories from a first hand source is always great.

In the case of the Aztec (which is actually spelled Azte k because it’s so edgy) I’m not sure which is uglier. The concept reminds me of this Ssangyong, which is about the lowest comment you can give a car.

I gotta give Ssangyong credit for creating a new (ugly) category: the SUV “coupe”. The Aztek is so edgy that I’d actually drive one.

The 21 or the prototype?
The 21 was quite ordinary overall, but it did have a nice sports model.
Renault 21 Turbo.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And if you want to go bigger, try a Renault 25 Turbo V6. At full Baccara trim it even had electronically controlled hydraulic suspension.

Predecessors to the mighty Safrane Biturbo

Don’t call it that. Merc has started referring to their 4-door SUVs as coupes. I won’t stand for it!

That’s why I used the quote sign. I cringe everytime when automakers decide to call four door sedans and stupid SUVs coupes.

Phew. Thank god
